Concerned over radicalisation of youth in jails in Jammu and Kashmir, the Mehbooba Mufti government has sent a comprehensive proposal to the Union home ministry for building new jail complexes across the state.
The state government has asked for funds to the tune of Rs 7 crore for building a separate jail in Srinagar. This jail will help in segregating youth booked for lesser charges like stone pelting from the dreaded terrorists. The home ministry believes this will help in preventing radicalisation and influencing of youth by the jihadi elements.
Concerned over reports from the local police and intelligence authorities, the home ministry, for now, is focussing on Srinagar, where both stone pelters and terrorists are lodged together, leading to radicalisation of youth.
"We are keen to kick start the process from Srinagar. It is surely a matter of concern and we are addressing the issue seriously," said a senior official.
Meanwhile, the onset of early summer in the valley is proving to be a challenge for security forces as reports of infiltration bids on the border are pouring in. Intelligence sources said terror outfits operating from Pakistan are trying to push terrorists across the border and such threat is likely to remain high over next few months.
