In an incident that will evoke memories of the horrifying Nirbhaya gang-rape case of 2012, a 5-year-old girl was found tortured to death with a wooden stick inserted into her genitalia in Haryana's Hisar district on Saturday.

The victim had gone to sleep with her mother and siblings on the previous night at their hut in Hisar's Uklana village. The mother reported the child missing early on Saturday morning; soon afterward, her body was found near a telephone exchange in the area.
Police found a 24cm wooden stick inserted in her genital area and she also had bruises and bleeding across her body. While police suspect she could have been raped, they said they said they could say so conclusively only after the post-mortem. The police have commenced investigations but no arrests have been made.
The victim's relatives and villagers shut shops and blocked roads in the area to demand justice; they have reportedly refused to cremate the body.
