Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a delegation of 26 US Congressmen who are on a tour to the country and used the opportunity to press India's case for a rethink on the proposed cap on the H1B visas.
According to a release by the Ministry of External Affairs, "The prime minister referred to the role of skilled Indian talent in enriching the American economy and society. He urged for developing a reflective, balanced and farsighted perspective on movement of skilled professionals." This delegation is an important one, given that it comprises both Democratic and Republican members, and it is the first time that so many US lawmakers are in India at the same time.
India is trying its hand at every opportunity of soft diplomacy to get the US to rethink on the visa issue. Most of the beneficiaries of the H1B visa system are Indians who operate all the technical oursourcing outfits in Silicon Valley.
