In a fresh bid to block obscene content on the web, the Communications and IT Ministry ordered that as many as 240 sites, offering escort services, be blocked with immediate effect.
Naming a number of websites that need to be blocked, including xmumbai.in, jasmineescorts.com, onlyoneescorts.com and pinkysingh.com among others, the ministry asked Internet Service Providers (ISP) to ban these sites immediately or face action under IT Rules, 2009, according to media reports.
Last year, the government had attracted the ire of people after it made an unsuccessful attempt to ban porn sites.
However, many of the escort sites that the government wants to be blocked can still be accessed as it takes time to block the sites.
However, not many believe that this move would be beneficial as it is possible to open another site the moment one is blocked. All that they need to do is to change the name or just a few alphabets of the site which would take only a few minutes.
