Tamil actor Kamal Haasan had called Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan his “political Guru”, but the latter will not be present in Madurai on Wednesday where Kamal is expected to launch his political party.

“The state conference of the CPI(M) is going to start the day after. He will be busy with that,'' an official with the chief minister's office told THE WEEK. “Instead, he may send a video message to Kamal Haasan,'' he added.

It is learnt that the message would be relayed at the venue.

Kamal has been quite vocal about his admiration for the Kerala chief minister. In his latest column in Anandavikadan magazine, Kamal said that he got over his confusions regarding political plunge after talking to Vijayan. “He told me to go ahead once the step is taken,” he wrote.

The Kerala chief minister was one of the first politicians Kamal had called on while deliberating upon the political call. After the meeting, Kamal had said that he and Pinarayi shared a special bond.

Kamal had also been open about his “communist leanings”.

He had heaped praise on the Kerala government when it decided to appoint dalit priests in temples. “Salute to Kerala CM Mr Pinarayi Vijayan for appointing 36 non-Brahmin priests... Periyar's dream realised!," the acclaimed actor said in a Facebook post.

The 63-year-old actor had previously said his purpose was to challenge the status quo that “has been plaguing the politics of Tamil Nadu”. He is expected to kick off his state-wide tour on Wednesday with the launch of his political party and its “guiding principles” in Madurai.
