An estimated 16 people were burnt alive in Barghi village of Chhindwara district during weekly distribution of kerosene oil at the fair price shop.
Barghi cooperative shop distributes subsidised grain and kerosene every Friday. Official sources said that hundreds of villagers were in queue waiting for their turn to get subsidised ration. Three dozen men were inside the building where kerosene and grains were stored.
Reportedly, there was a blast and fire erupted. Several people were trapped inside the building. Police said 16 dead bodies have been taken out, while many others have been seriously injured.
Senior district administration officials have rushed to spot. Fire tenders from nearby Harrai block have also arrived.
