Releasing this week: Padmaavat, Early Man

cinephile-preview While Padmaavat grapples between history and folklore, cavemen fight to save their home in Early Man

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s dream project Padmaavat is all set to hit theatres on Thursday. While the controversies and protests surrounding its release is far from over, the Padmaavat team can rejoice in the fact that the film will reach its audience within two months of its original release date.

One wonders if there is anything more to be said about the Deepika-Shahid and Ranveer starrer that you don't already know. Padmaavat is based on a poem of the same name by a Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Perhaps, his most famous work. Jayasi’s Padmavat is the story of the historic siege of Chittor by the then Sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khilji and his conquest for Rani Padmini, who honourably chose death over falling into the hands of the enemy. If the trailer of the film promises a larger-than-life experience complete with breathtaking costumes, magnificent visuals and grand sets, the film itself will answer the big question—what the Padmavati versus Padmaavat hoopla was all about?

Meanwhile Akshay Kumar's PadMan and Neeraj Pandey's Aiyaary, which were scheduled for release this week, have been pushed to the first week of February to avoid clash with Bhansali’s epic drama.

If you are an animation film fan, then Oscar-winning animator and director Nick Park's Early Man could be your perfect pick for the weekend. Set at the dawn of time when woolly mammoths and other prehistoric creatures roamed the earth, this stop-motion animated adventure comedy tells the story of a tribe of simple cavemen from the Stone Age, threatened by the advent of the Bronze Age and how they fight to save their home.
