South Indian actress Kalpana Ranjani passes away in Hyderabad

National-award winning actress Kalpana Ranjani passed away reportedly due to heart attack on Monday in Hyderabad. The 51-year-old actress was in the city for the shooting of a bilingual film. And she was also scheduled to attend the IFFA award function.

According to reports, Kalpana, who arrived in Hyderabad for shooting on Sunday afternoon, was staying at a hotel. On Monday morning she was found unconscious in her hotel room and was rushed to Apollo Hospital, where she was declared dead by the doctors.

Veteran actor K.P.A.C Lalitha told news channels that Kalpana told her that she was undergoing treatment at Amrita Hospital in Kochi for heart-valve related problems. Kalpana, who divorced her Malayalam film director husband Anil in 2012, is now survived by her 16-year-old daughter, Sreemayi.

The actress is known for her comical roles in south Indian film industry, namely in Tamil and Malayalam films. She bagged a National Award for the best supporting actress for her performance in 2012 film Thanichalla Njan. She is the sister of film actresses Urvashi and Kalaranjini.

Kalpana, the daughter of theater artist V.P. Nair and Vijayalakshmi, has acted in more than 300 films, since she made her debut in M.T. Vasudevan Nair's film Manj in 1983. Her latest Malayalam film Charlie became a hit and is still running in cinemas in Kerala.
