WORLD OF COMICS

Sixth Delhi Comic Con begins at NSIC ground

The kumbh mela of fictional characters, super stars and comic book heroes is back again in Delhi. In its sixth chapter this year, the Alto Comic Con 2016 is clearly comfortable both with this desi crowd as well as desi form. Even as Manga and Game of Thrones characters share space with the good old Superheroes like Batman and Captain America, home-grown Baahubali has also found firm footing.

The festival began on Friday and will continue till Sunday. Many a smart schoolgoer, trying to avoid the weekend rush of Comic Con crazy adults, happily bunked school on Friday. The fest, which debuted six years ago at Delhi Haat, and had free entry, today comes with heavily priced tickets in the range of Rs 300, though there were discounts for early online and group bookings.

The NSIC ground at Okhla, has turned into a wonderland. People can be seen dressed up as Batman's Joker, Pikachu the Pokemon and a host of recognisable and unrecognisable characters. Most of them are competing in the Cosplay (costume play) contests, which come with big prizes. In the WWE rampwalk section, enthusiasts can make an entry of their favourite WWE champion; the props are provided and the signature tune is played for you. Baahubali promoters have opened a huge virtual reality (VR) area, while the Manga comics have their own dedicated corner. There's even a section where comic book strips are converted to animation strips instantly.

You could get some body painting done or even better, pick up a souvenir from the merchandise outlets. Come loaded with cash or at least a topped up e-wallet. These takeaways can be pricey. A stylish wand that looks as if only Mr Ollivander of Diagon Alley could have carved, comes at a princely sum of Rs 1,500. A collapsible sword that would even make Jon Snow want to ditch his Longclaw is priced at Rs 500. But then, what's a few thousand rupees for a hardcore Comic Con fan?
