No release for Padmaavat in multiplexes in Gujarat

Controversial movie Padmaavat won't be released in multiplexes of Gujarat, even as the Karni Sena, spearheading the agitation against the movie, has called for a bandh on Thursday.

The movie was slated to be released in the state on Thursday. However, in the wake of incidents of violence in the western part of Ahmedabad where malls and multiplexes were damaged, the Multiplex Association on Wednesday decided not to release the movie.

Manubhai Patel, chairman of Multiplex Association, confirmed the news.

Karni Sena in-charge for Gujarat, Arjunsinh Gohil, called for a bandh on Thursday but appealed supporters to maintain peace.

On Wednesday, various Rajput associations held a meeting with the state government. After the meeting, Gujarat president of Karni Sena Raj Shekhawat said as the movie was not being released there was no question of a bandh call. However, Gohil was quick to reject Shekhawat's statement claiming that he had nothing to do with the Karni Sena.

While cracks emerged in the Karni Sena, the police presented a large number of people, nabbed from the sites of violence, in the court for remand. The police are also checking the CCTV footages to arrest more people in connection with the incidents. One of the complaints registered by the police also mentions that an attempt was made to strangulate a policeman.

The police said they were looking into whether the attacks were pre-planned or not.

Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, J.K. Bhatt, said after the candle march, some people went on a rampage.

The accused are believed to have brought sticks and acid bottles from Sanand, near Ahmedabad.
