No ban on Padmaavat; Supreme Court rejects states' pleas

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the pleas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and another petition by the Karni Sena to ban release of Padmaavat.

The three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra came down heavily on the states and asked them to obey the apex court's orders. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana had earlier said they will not screen the film, citing law and order trouble. The SC had set aside their orders on January 18. It is against this order the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh submitted a review plea.

Despite the SC ruling, Karni Sena has unleashed massive protests, and threatened to burn theatres that screen Padmaavat. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali film will release on January 25.

Leaders of the Shree Rajput Karni Sena met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday and demanded a ban on the film in the state.

"I met the UP chief minister today and demanded a ban on the film Padmaavat," Karni Sena patron Lokendra Singh Kalvi told reporters after his 20-minute meeting with Adityanath.

People will impose "janta curfew" in cinema halls in Uttar Pradesh if the movie is screened, he said.
