INTERVIEW

My father is a bigger method actor than I am: Ranbir

In his memoir, Khullam Khulla, Rishi Kapoor writes that there has always been a thin barrier that stands between his son and him. “He is part of a new generation and I'm uncomfortable with some of the things he does,” he writes in the book co-authored by Meena Iyer. He further says, “The distance that exists between us is similar to the one between my father and me. Ranbir and I see each other through this space, but can't feel each other.”

While talking to THE WEEK, recently, the younger Kapoor spoke about his father as well.

Excerpts from the interview

On method acting: To be honest, my father is way big a method actor than I am. He doesn't accept it, though. We both have different methods as we both are different actors. Every actor has his own method. I am not following a constructed method. For every part that I play, it comes with new challenges; it comes with new experiences. You just have to be the best version of that character to make it engaging on screen. In today's time, we do one film at a time. So we can take different characters and different experiences at a time. When my father was acting, he was doing six films at a time and at that time, every actor used to play a hero. Today, every actor is playing a character. That change has been quite dramatic. If you see my father's films now, the kind of work that he did... he was really doing some very interesting characters.

On Rishi Kapoor being perceived as bounderish: That's how he is, he starts shouting first. But if you don't get bullied by him, then he is fine.

On Rishi Kapoor revealing unknown facts about Ranbeer in his book: To be honest, I have not read his book. I have lived with him for 34 years, so I know everything. He is a very honest man. He is not a hypocrite. He says it how he feels. I am really inspired by the life he has lived, how passionate he is. He is very boisterous and speaks his mind. I am quite a hypocrite that way. I am quite an introvert, I am quite shy. My father is on the opposite side of the spectrum. That's amazing; you just have different personalities.

On their relationship: What he feels about me and what I feel about him – there is a little distance between us – but there is a lot of love, respect, admiration and care. What I am today is because of all the values that my parents have taught us—my sister and me. I have a great admiration for my parents. I am grateful to have parents like this.
