Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, Delhi University, has recently announced that its street play festival, Manthan 2017, will take place in February-March this year. At the month-long festival, about 100 teams will perform street plays on relevant social issues across India on roads, in markets, slums, villages, malls, schools, NGOs and other public places.
This year, Manthan will have around 2,000 artistes performing in 20 states, covering 40 major cities. Unlike other street play festivals, Manthan is calling upon the street play societies of various colleges to bring street theatre to public places and schools, to evoke a sense of responsibility and cognisance about sensitive issues affecting the society.
Some of the cities chosen to spread awareness are Delhi, NCR, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Karnal, Goa, Shimla, Dehradun, Raipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, Lucknow, Indore, Bhopal, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Ranchi.
Verve, the street play society of the college, is organising the event. In the past, Verve has performed street plays on topics such as inequality, physical disability, political consciousness and religious fanaticism, and have been successful in creating mass awareness.
