If last week's releases were an ode to drama, romance and dark comedy, this week explores bone-chilling possibilities of whodunnit thrillers. Kushal Srivastava's murder mystery Vodka Diaries, starring Kay Kay Menon, Raima Sen and Mandira Bedi, revolves around a string of murders in a single night and ACP Ashwini Dixit's attempt to solve the case. Set in winters in Manali, the long-shot visuals in the trailer promise a mesmerising visual treat amid the unfolding mystery.

The next in line is actor Samir Soni's directorial debut My Birthday Song with Sanjay Suri and Nora Fatehi in lead roles. My Birthday Song is a dark psychological thriller about a married man who loses track of reality and finds himself in an unexplainable situation. During the film promotion, Samir revealed that he wrote the script 5-6 years ago, but it was only after a huge thumbs up for the plot from Karan Johar that he decided to actually make it. Apparently, Karan also pushed Samir to direct the film.

While Bollywood plans to ride high on murder mysteries this Friday, Hollywood offers a political thriller based on true events to history buffs. Darkest Hour, starring Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman, goes back to the early days of World War II, when newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill faced his darkest hour as the leader of a country under the threat of invasion. Churchill must confront the ultimate choice—either negotiate peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or stand firm to fight on against incredible odds.
