Goa gets artsy

  • Rohini Devasher’s bone forest
  • Omlette, one of the works by Sarnath Banerjee
  • A creation by Somnath Hore

It's not everyday that art lovers enjoy some of the best works of two distinguished galleries. However, it is now happening at Sunaparanta - Goa Centre for the Arts, where Mumbai-based Project 88 and Kolkata-based Gallerie 88 are displaying some of the works of their respective galleries under one roof. The show titled as 'Deliberated Time' will be open for public till March 31.

The displayed works belong to a group of young and senior artists, classic as well as postmodern voices. Some of the artists whose works will be displayed at the exhibition are Rohini Devasher, Neha Choksi, Gobardhan Ash, Somnath Hore, Debrata Chakraborty, Hemali Bhuta, Meera Mukherjee, Sarnath Banerjee, K.G. Subramanyan, F.N. Souza, Andrew Ananda Voogel and Krishna Reddy. The show at Sunaparanta has been curated by Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi.

"The works displayed reflect a broad range of themes and ideas, responding to varying political situations, technological developments and mythological legends. They portray a plethora of archetypes, landscapes and concepts to allow us to contemplate the developments of Indian art in relationship to our nation's own history, as well as in relation to the world in general," says Sree Banerjee Goswami, director, Project 88.

The show also marks the coming of two galleries to showcase their artists. According to Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi, curator, and honorary director at Sunaparanta - Goa Centre for the Arts, the artists' showcase will be about a miscellany of work, paintings, installations and video work. "It's looking at 40 years of gallery time, with very singular, definitive aesthetic, the first time that Gallerie 88 and Project 88 have shown together; the show is an ode to how aesthetics changes over time, influenced by aesthetics, culture and politics. It is the first time two powerhouse galleries have showed together, that their artists as varied as F.N. Souza to modern stars like RAQS Media Collective, and that this sets the new bar for art in Goa and reminds us that a place we originally (and lazily) associated with beaches and beer has just upped the game."

While Gallerie 88 represents some of India’s most prolific artists of the 20th century, Project 88 represents contemporary, Indian international artists who use experimental media to explore and challenge existing notions of time, space and the environment. Sunaparanta- Goa Centre for The Arts was founded by Dattaraj Salgaocar and Siddharth Shanghvi. It is a not-for-profit, process-based public arts space that dialogues directly and freely with the community to encourage creation, learning, understanding and appreciation of various art forms.

Talking about the uniqueness of the show, Goswami says, "Delivering the diversity of styles, traditions and ideas, the show reflects upon the expansive landscape of modern and contemporary art and the way it engages with the world. It takes on a phenomenological and socio-cultural lens, influenced by the groundbreaking technological and philosophical shifts that have occurred over the recent decades. Ultimately it retraces our past, re-thinks modern Indian historiography and re-imagines time.
