Films to watch out for this week

mubarakan-cast Actors Arjun Kapoor (L), Athiya Shetty (2L), Ileana D’Cruz (2R) and Anil Kapoor (R) attend a promotional event for their upcoming Hindi film Mubarakan, in Mumbai | AFP

July, for films, began with a dry spell. After a critical and lukewarm response to Salman Khan's Tubelight in June, Mom (July 7) starring Sridevi and Guest In London (July 7), too, couldn't do any wonders at the box-office. In the following week,(July 14), Ranbir Kapoor's Jagga Jasoos got extreme response—the audiences either enjoyed it thoroughly or didn't like it at all. But, at the box-office, it couldn't create any magic. Onir's Shab, too, fizzled out. Last week's (July 21) much-talked about Lipstick Under My Burkha got a good response from the critics. The box-office collection (Rs 8.44 crore till Wednesday), the team claims, is good enough for a “festival film”. Director Alankrita Shrivastava said, "The response of the Indian audience is phenomenal and unprecedented. It is a victory for honest storytelling and the power of the stories of women.” However, the other release, Munna Michael failed.

Now, there's a lot of hope from the four releases this Friday.

Mubarakan

Starring Anil Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor in a double role along with Athiya Shetty and Ileana D’Cruz, Mubarakan is touted as a laugh riot. A romantic comedy, the films charts the story of cousins and look-alike Karan and Charan. While Karan is born and brought up in London, Charan is born and brought up in Punjab. There's confusion and chaos because of the similarity in their looks, both in their love life and personal life, and it's their uncle Kartar (Anil Kapoor) who is trying to help them sort it out. Directed by Anees Baazmi, the film can be expected to a madcap comedy. A 156-minute film, it has got a U/A certificate from the CBFC.

Raag Desh

A film on the famous Red Fort trials that changed the course of India's azaadi movement, Raag Desh tracks the story of the three officers who were court martialled—Prem Sehgal, Gurbaksh Dhillon and Shah Nawaz Khan—for treason against the British. Written and directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, the cast includes Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh and Mohit Marwah, and is being presented by Rajyasabha TV and produced by Gurdeep Singh Sappal. Unlike many films, the promotions for which are unending, Raag Desh's promotions has been low-key, except that for the first time a film's trailer was launched at Parliament House. Like Dhulia's previous films, Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, this, too, may work on the word-of-mouth, of course, if the content is good. A 137-minute film, it has got a U/A certificate from CBFC.

Indu Sarkar

Like all Madhur Bhandarkar films, there's already been a lot of talk around his next Indu Sarkar. Based in the Emergency era (1975-77), the film revolves around a stammering poetess, Indu (Kirti Kulhari) and her diplomat husband. Bhandarkar says that this film was waiting to be made. The controversies around the film—from Congress opposing it because of the resemblance of many characters to the members of the political party to the CBFC's proposal to cut many words, scenes—has made sure that it remained in the limelight. But when has it not happened to a film directed by Bhandarkar. Even if it is through controversies, the filmmaker makes sure to keep the buzz on. Now, only time will tell whether he has created a critically acclaimed film like Page 3, Chandni Bar and Fashion or duds like his last, Calendar Girls or the controversial Heroine. A 139-minute film, it has got a U/A certificate from the CBFC.

Baarat Company

The second rom-com of the week is set in the interesting backdrop of Lucknow. According to the film's team, it comes layered with a message. Directed by Syed Ahmad Afzal, who has previously delivered the hard-hitting social drama, Laal Rang (2016) set in Karnal, the claim can easily be bought. The film stars Anurita Jha and Sandeepa Dhar. It is 125 minutes long, and has a U/A certificate.
