Siddharth Malhotra’s Twitter goof-up

On Friday, when the judiciary convicted Ram Rahim of Dera Sacha Sauda for the rape of two girls, everyone jumped in jubilation. Justice had finally prevailed. The who's who of the film industry, who often put up a safe front in public, took to Twitter to express delight over the judgment.

However, seven-film-old Siddharth Malhotra was caught in an embarrassing situation when he, while rejoicing the judgement, also plugged his recent release—A Gentleman—in his tweet.

Malhotra's tweet, definitely at a wrong time, had him express his concern about the violence in Haryana following the judgment, while also appealing people to go watch his film. “To all the people of Haryana, please stay safe. Hope you can see our film soon #Agentleman #PeaceAndLove,” he tweeted just to be trashed by the twitterati for being insensitive.

A step forward for MAMI’s word-to-screen

The Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) hosted the second edition of the Word To Screen Market, an initiative to bring the world of literature and cinema closer. The market focuses, not only on facilitating deals, but also on charting out a roadmap that puts systems in place so that there is professionalism and fairness in the process.

The day-long event witnessed various studios and production houses including Phantom, Fox Star, Alt Balaji, Aamir Khan Production and the publication houses like Penguin, Rajkamal etc in attendance for the market.

On the sidelines of the event, festival director Smriti Kiran, while talking to THE WEEK, said that the market began last year to fill a gap. “Our constant crib across the board (films, TV, digital content) is that we don't have stories, good writers etc etc. But the fact is that we are not mining literature for cinema content at all. I wonder why?”

When MAMI began the program last year, it attempted to bring the two verticals of literature and cinema together. This time, however, they have taken it ahead by going deeper and facilitating one-on-one meetings between the publishers and the content creators. “While like last year, we had a list of 18 books that MAMI recommended, we also had an additional list of books that could become good scripts that we shared with the content creators,” said Kiran hoping that it will grow further. And why not. We have seen so many good films/series churned out of books, Game Of Thrones being one of the biggest examples.
