India will play host to the BRICS film festival from September 2 to 6.

“The main focus of the festival is to celebrate the excellence in cinema by rewarding producers, actors and directors,’’ said Venkaiah Naidu, minister of information and broadcasting, at a press conference.

India's theme in its BRICS chairmanship is building responsive, inclusive and collection solutions. We have adopted a five-pronged approach—institution building to further deepen, sustain and institutionalise BRICS cooperation; implementation of the decisions from previous Summits; integrating the existing cooperation mechanisms; innovation and continuity—the minister said.

The festival, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his trip to Russia, aims more than just cementing ties through celluloid. “It will be a platform for the industry to explore areas of cooperation, which can be leveraged through economic groupings,’’ Naidu said, adding the ministry is working to ensure that this is not just a film-based programme but an opportunity for the delegates to get a glimpse of cultural and cuisine of BRICS nations.

The focus for India will be on enhanced people-to-people contact, the minister said. “Especially the youth, we want the youth of these countries to come together and interact and understand.” An under-17 football competition and a young diplomats summit has also been planned, he added.

In an attempt to foster bonding between the young and restless, the festival will showcase many student films. The festival will end on a Chinese note with a Jackie Chan film.
