Box office: Rajinikanth's Kabali breaking records, making history

The much-awaited film of the year Kabali, starring superstar Rajinikanth continues to dominate the box office across the country.

While the total collection of the film's opening weekend is yet to be announced, the trade pundits have shared Chennai collection figures suggesting that the film has smashed box office records previously held by other stars in the industry.

Film trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai tweeted that collections of Kabali in Chennai on its opening weekend, which has set a new record.

“#Kabali @ChennaiBoxOffice (July 22-24) Ruled the charts 1 to 5. 96.5% of the show timing had only the @superstarrajini film playing,” he tweeted.

"#Kabali @CBO for the weekend has netted a record Rs 3.82 Cr, a new city record. All screens charged govt stipulated rates (Rs 120),” he added.

According to reports, Kabali collected a whopping Rs 48 crore in the domestic market on its opening day. The film collected Rs 21.5 crore in Tamil Nadu alone, surpassing the previous record of Vedalam.

Vedalam, with Ajith Kumar in the lead, had collected Rs 15 crore on its first day in Tamil Nadu.

The film is likely to maintain its bullish trend at the box office in Chennai, given that the tickets for next three days have already been sold out in many theatres, including multiplexes and single screens, said reports.

Kabali movie review

The film has become unstoppable at the box office, in spite of getting mixed reviews.

The story of Kabali is set in Malaysia. The film has an ageing gangster, who gets outsmarted by his enemies and loses everything, including his family, besides doing 25 years behind bars. After his release from the jail, the gangster seeks redemption.

The film is directed by Pa.Ranjith.
