The Chief Minister of Telangana K. Chandrasekhar Rao will lay the foundation stone for a mega textile park sometime next month. This Rs. 1,150 crore integrated textile park will be situated between Geesukonda and Sangem mandals of Warangal district.

Thought about and promised by various previous governments the park had remained unfinished for quite some time. But thanks to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, it will finally take shape. The main vision behind this huge project is to have "a fibre to fabric" facility. The park will have ginning, spinning, weaving, processing and garment making processes. Built on a 1,190 acre campus, the mega textile park is expected to attract investments to the tune of Rs 11,500 crore and provide direct or indirect employment to 1.13 lakh people.

While textile parks in different parts of the country like Solapur, Tirupur and Surat are engaged in manufacturing specific categories of garments, the park in Warangal will cover all segments. The state government has plans to connect all the spinning units, both handlooms and power looms, to the textile park. "The major investors who have already shown interest are big players like Bhilwara and Tirupur industries," says Handloom Secretary Sailaja Ramaiyer. "The idea is to bring in small clusters into the park and energise the industry," says Sailaja.

While Telangana produces 60 lakh bales of cotton, the local mills use just around 10 lakh bales and there are 33 spinning mills operating in Telangana with 20 lakh spindler capacity. The rest of the cotton is bought by other neighbouring states. But with officials assuring that incentives would be given to develop individual units in the park, things might look up. In fact, in his Independence Day speech, industries minister K.T. Rama Rao talked about reviving this industry was heard promoting the textile park.

Warangal, which produces large quantities of cotton and has number of spinning mills will get the necessary boost with the set up of this mega textile park. The park is expected to be ready in a period of nine to 12 months and the textile units are likely to start production there after. There is news that leading textile mills will also set up their anchor units in this textile park.

The Chennai based PSG College of Technology have signed up with the Department of Handlooms and Textiles and Apparel Export Parks. The college will provide technical assistance in skill development and training, and R&D support for technological upgrade.

Meanwhile, at least ten industrialists from Tirupur have committed to invest in Telangana, according to KTR. The state government will also come up with a new textile policy, where special incentives will be given to those setting up their units in the textile park, with capital and power incentives and many other benefits. Meanwhile, the textile association members are demanding that the government should provide incentives for at least nine years so that it becomes sustainable for them.
