Union Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal has asked people not to be anxious about salary day on Thursday. Said Meghwal to THE WEEK, “There will not be any shortage of cash in banks tomorrow. Having said that, the government would continue to advise people in urban areas to adopt digital transactions once salaries are credited in their accounts.“

Meghwal said that the government had asked banks to deploy mobile ATM vans at important locations. “People in rural areas, especially, need not panic unnecessarily. It is the duty of the government to ensure that there is no cash shortage. I am sure salary day would go smooth,” he said.

The salary week, post demonetisation, from December 1 to 8, would test the Union government’s ability to ensure cash flow and avoid chaos in banks.

C.H. Venkatachalam, general secretary, All India Bank Employees’ Association, warned that pay day would turn into pain day as banks would not be able to meet the demand as the system did not have enough cash.

Kerala’s finance minister, Thomas Isaac, has said that his government would not be able to give salary and pension to employees through the treasuries because of shortage of new notes.
