Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Trusts, said that the employees of Tata Group were the inheritors and custodians of trusts. The Trusts own 66 per cent of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group.

Tata wrote a letter to the group's employees on Friday, on the occasion of the 178th birth anniversary of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder. The day is celebrated as the founders day by the salt-to-software conglomerate. This year also marks the completion of 125 years of the Tata Trusts.

"As employees of the group, you are the inheritors and custodians of the Trusts and of our belief in making a sustainable change in our society," Tata said.

"We celebrate the birth of our founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, but for me personally, it is a celebration of what each one of you brings to our organisation," he further wrote.

The Tata Trusts are involved in various philanthropic activities, including education, rural and farm upliftment, healthcare among others. The first of the Tata Trusts that was set up was the JN Tata Endowment Trust in 1892, for the higher education of Indians. The other trusts include the JRD Tata Trust, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Tata Education Trust among others.

"You bring your zeal, your vigor, your integrity, and most importantly your hard work. It is because of you that we can derive and obtain the opportunity and the privilege to serve our community and through that, our nation," Tata wrote to the employees.

He said that the Tata employees had played an important role in making the legacy of the Trusts come alive.

The Tata Trusts have been in the news over the last few months, after former Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry raised issues over the governance structure and powers the Trusts had. Mistry was ousted as the Tata Sons chairman in October last year. N Chandrasekaran, earlier the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services, formally took over as the chairman of Tata Sons in February.
