Khadi sales shoot up to more than Rs 2000 crore

Khadi production has reached a record high of Rs 1600 crore in 2016-17. It has created employment for more than 11 lakh people. Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Kalraj Mishra, said this while outlining achievements of his ministry. The minister said that sales of khadi products have also gone up and have reached Rs 2005 crore.

The MSME ministry had started a modified marketing development assistance scheme (MMDA) to help in the marketing of khadi products. During 2016-17 Rs 315 crore was provided under MMDA. As on 31st march 2017, 1931 khadi institutions had claimed MMDA with 3,09, 154 artisans registered on their web portal with aadhar linkage.

KVIC (khadi and village industries commission), the body that promotes khadi products, now plans to set up export cells to promote overseas sales of the product.

After Yoga, Prime Minister Narendra Modi now wants to make khadi an international brand.

In 2017-18, Khadi production is expected to reach Rs 2000 crore, generating employment for more than 19.50 lakh people.

The village industries production has also crossed Rs 50,000 crore, creating employment for more than 133 lakh people.

Listing out its achievements in coir production, the minister said that it has reached 5 lakh million tonne, creating employment for 7 lakh people every year. The exports of coir and coir products were more than Rs 2282 crore, all time high during 2016-17.
