Prime Minister Narendra Modi says your mobile device is your bank branch. He also urges people to use their cell phones for all things to do with money. An ASSOCHAM-EY study points out that the mobile devices are used in 40-45 per cent of transactions that fall in the area of cybercrime. This is expected to grow to 60-65 per cent by 2017.

The study  titled ‘Strategic National Measures to Combat Cybercrime,’ says  credit and debit card fraud cases top the chart of cybercrimes. There has been a six-fold increase in such cases over the past three years.

About 46 per cent complaints of online banking are related to credit/debit card fraud. Popular social media site Facebook was responsible for 39 per cent complaints, which pertained to morphed pictures, cyber stalking or cyber bullying.

Other major cyber complaints were cheating through mobile (21 per cent), hacking of e-mail ID (18 per cent) and abusive/offensive/obscene calls and SMS (12 per cent). The study proposed a dedicated national governing unit which could be the central agency for all state government cybercrime agencies to coordinate, integrate and share information related to cybercrime. Such a central agency could be responsible for driving all the cybercrime prevention initiatives, such as collaboration with private sectors, and training and awareness across the country.
