Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has been announced the best airport in India and Central Asia by UK-based airline review and air travel guide, Skytrax at the World Airport Awards, held at Amsterdam airport's passenger terminal on Wednesday.

The World Airport Awards are prestigious accolades for the airport industry, and are voted by customers in the largest, annual global airport customer satisfaction survey. Skytrax World Airport Awards are a global benchmark of airport excellence and widely known as the Passengers Choice Awards.

The 2017 Awards are based on 13.82 million airport survey questionnaires, for which 105 different nationalities of air travelers participated during the survey period.

The survey tracked passenger responses from July 2016 to February 2017, covering 550 airports and evaluating traveller experiences across different airport services.

The key performance indicators for rating airport services range from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, through security and immigration upto departure at the gate.

"GMR Group takes immense pride in transforming the passenger experience at Delhi’s IGI Airport, which is India’s gateway and the capital airport. This recognition is a testimony to all our employees and partners, who have consistently met the expectations of our customers," said I. Prabhakara Rao, CEO of DIAL, that operates Delhi airport, in a statement on Wednesday.

Rao said that he and his team would continue to endeavour to take Delhi airport to new heights.

"It (the award) underlines how well Delhi airport is performing in terms of customer satisfaction, to be recognised as the Best Airport in India and Central Asia, and in a most competitive market, this is a great achievement,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax.

IGIA has recently achieved world no 2 position at the Airport Service Quality Aawrds of 2016, with over 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA) visiting the airport last year.  The airport has 128 destinations—68 International and 60 domestic—which are connected by 11 domestic and 51 foreign carriers.
