A woman from Muthukuru Mandal in Nellore district filed a police complaint, accusing her in-laws of trying to kill her by setting her ablaze.
The complainant, N Girija, got married to T Srinivasulu in August 2014. Soon after the marriage, she began to face harassment from her mother-in-law Lakshmi Kanthamma and sister-in-law Subhashini, demanding dowry. The in-laws were more disappointed when Girija gave birth to a girl.
When she got pregnant again, the in-laws took her to an astrologer who predicted that the next child will also be a girl. Kanthamma asked Girija to abort the child. When her son sided with his wife, Kanthamma filed a complaint accusing her son and daughter-in-law of torture to get her property.
On August 20, when Srinivasulu was not at home, Kanthamma and Subhashini poured kerosene on Girija and acid on her stomach and tried to set her on fire. Girija managed to get out of the house and pleaded with village leaders to intervene. When they refused to do so, she went to the police station where the SP said Girija was not set ablaze by her in-laws.
The police registered an FIR against Girija’s husband and her in-laws under IPC section 307. Srinivasulu and his father have been taken in for questioning.
