Authorities of the University of Hyderabad gave an ultimatum to the agitating students to remove all the tents put up on the campus. Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao Podile sent a notice to the student union president asking them to remove the tents within 48 hours.
The tents were put up on the campus by students who have been protesting over the death of Rohit Vemula, a Dalit students who committed suicide on January 17 after being suspended by the authorities over a scuffle with an ABVP students.
Rohith and four other students had set up ‘Velivada’ enclosure, or Dalit colony in the shopping complex before their suspension. After Rohith's death, the other students continued to stay in the tents and maintained that they would sleep there till Rohith got justice.
The Ambedkar Students’ Association rejected VC's order and said they wouldn't allow authorities to remove the tents. They alleged that the authorities are vacating the hostels to weaken the Rohith Vemula movement. Students said they would continue the struggle and didn't mind going to jail.
Meanwhile, the one-man Inquiry commission constituted by the HRD ministry to look into the circumstances of Rohith's death has been granted a three-month extension. It is now required to submit its report by August 1.
