Sustained vigil across Mumbai after possible terror threat

mumbai-terror-ani Search ops in Mumbai after armed men sighted near Uran | ANI Twitter

The Navy is being alerted and the police launched a massive man-hunt after a bunch of school children said they have spotted 'suspicious looking men in military fatigues' with faces covered, near Uran 50 km off Mumbai. Prima facie, the authorities learnt about the men close to an ammunition dump in the vicinity. But nothing much is known about the men's whereabouts as of now.

Inputs about a possible infiltration from the sea side was there in place for sometime but the threat levels have gone up notches following the most recent Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) attack on the Army camp in Uri.

Uran is home to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, both critical infrastructures of immense national import. Official sources told THE WEEK that the information provided for by the children are taken in all seriousness and effective counter-measures already in place. Mumbai police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar had convened a series of emergency meetings aimed at thrashing out measures to counter any terrorist incursions into the city from the peripheral near-sea areas. Navi Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale too has been asked to ensure and sustain vigil and searches across sensitive stretches of the Mumbai's sister city.

However, till this report was filed, no arrest has been made anywhere in Mumbai or in Navi Mumbai where the 'suspicious men' were being spotted by school going children.
