Vidya Balan to promote govt schemes

In a bid to promote its welfare schemes, the Samajwadi Party government has appointed cine star Vidya Balan the brand ambassador of the state. Vidya will promote the government's dream scheme ‘Samajwadi Pension Yogana’ in the rural pockets of the state, especially among women. As the Assembly polls are not very far in the state, the latest move is seen as an attempt to bring rural voters in favour of the SP. Justifying the appointment of Vidya Balan, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said, “She has a huge fan following in UP and when she will campaign to make welfare schemes popular, people will take a note of it.”

Rape attempt on 3-year-old girl

Incidents of sexual assaults on minors are on the rise in UP. In the latest case, a person was arrested in Kanpur after he allegedly tried to rape a three-year-old girl on Thursday night. The girl was sleeping with her mother when the accused Bajrangi Pandey quietly took her to the first floor of the building and tried to rape her. Failing in his attempt, he allegedly chewed her fingers and bit badly on her cheek. Screams of the victim woken up others who caught the accused and handed over to police.

Septuagenarian held for molesting dalit girl

A 72-year-old professor was held in Lucknow for allegedly molesting a 21-year-old dalit student in the same college where he teaches. The accused Om Prakash Diwedi, a Hindi professor, allegedly tried to molest the girl in a vehicle which she hired to return home from college. In order to save herself, the girl jumped off the speeding vehicle and approached the traffic police at an intersection. The traffic cops called the police station concerned and got the accused arrested.

Students hold 'Panchayat' to protest eve teasing

A group of girls students of Aligarh in western UP held a ‘Panchayat’ on Friday to protest against eve teasing in a city college allegedly by some Samajwadi Party student leaders. Hundreds of girls assembled on one platform and vowed to oppose eve teasing. Rizwana, the convenor of the 'panchyat', said that the girls had mailed around 4000 letters to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav asking strong action against those who were involved in the incident.
