A senior Congress leader mooted the demand that Rahul should take over as Congress president, and it was met with unanimous agreement amongst all CWC members.

"In today's working committee meeting, members unanimously expressed their strong sentiment that Rahul Gandhiji must take over as president of the Congress party, respecting the wishes of crores of Congress workers and our well wishers," Antony said briefing the media about the outcome of the CWC meeting.

He said that the CWC members felt Rahul should take the leadership against the dictatorial policies of the Modi government.

Antony said that the CWC members would convey the unanimous sentiment of the committee to Sonia, who will also be requested to take the necessary follow-up action.

Congress sources said that after the CWC apprises her of their desire to see Rahul as party president, she was expected to call another meeting of the committee to put its stamp of approval on the elevation.
