As the country witnesses various patriotic programmes in forms of yatras and exhibitions ahead of the Independence Day, the Indian railways are also gearing up to give the message of patriotism to crores of its passengers.

For the first time in the past 69 years of independence, the railways have decided to 'hoist' tri-colour on its engines. The railway board has issued directives in this regard. The motive behind this move is to catalyse the love for the country and promote the feeling of patriotism among the countrymen.

After this directive, Northern and North- Eastern railways have geared up to have tri-colour on diesel engines. According to senior DCM Ajit Kumar Sinha, the directives have been issued in the wake of the Independence Day on Auguist 15 but will continue throughout the year. This would instill a sense of pride and increase the love for the country, he said. Sinha, however, did not say anything about when this task will be completed.

In various divisions of railways, chief mechanical engineer have been asked to install the tricolor according to standard measures. After 'pasting' tricolor on engines, it will be mandatory to inform the railway board in this connection.

Whether tricolor will be painted on engines, or a stickers will be pasted on them or tricolor made of cloth will be hoisted on them is not yet certain. As per directives, engines should have tri-colour on them before August 15.

Railway tickets too have tri-colour printed on them if the proposal is cleared by the board.
