Kollam temple fire: PM Narendra Modi to visit Kerala


Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that he will visit Kerala to assess the situation in Kollam, where a massive fire devastated a temple killing at least 86 and injuring more than 300.

He has expressed his condolences over the incident and said he was shocked beyond words.

“Fire at temple in Kollam is heart-rending & shocking beyond words. My thoughts are with families of the deceased & prayers with the injured,” he tweeted.

He said that he spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and has assured the Centre's support to deal with the situation.

“Spoke to CM Oommen Chandy about the fire at a temple in Kollam. Arranging for immediate shifting of those critically injured via helicopter,” he said. “Have also asked my Cabinet colleague & Health Minister JPNadda to immediately reach the site of the fire tragedy in Kollam.”

“I will be reaching Kerala soon to take stock of the situation arising due to the unfortunate fire tragedy in Kollam,” he added.

At around 3:30 am on Sunday, the fireworks display at Putingal temple caused an exploitation at a storeroom filled with crackers and pyrotechnics materials. The massive fire has resulted in a large scale loss of life and property.
