The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Karnataka government to release 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu from October 7 to October 18.
The bench of Justice Dipak Misra sand Justice Uday Umesh Lalit also asked the Cauvery Supervisory Committee to visit the river basin area in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to assess the ground realities and submit a report by October 17.
The supervisory committee would be headed by the chairman of Central Water Commission. Besides him, the panel would comprise the chief engineer, the chief secretaries of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu or their nominees, the states' chief engineers or their nominees and a representative each from Kerala and Puducherry.
The top court had earlier on Tuesday asked Karnataka how much water it can share with the downstream state in this period and sought the information be conveyed to it by 3.15 pm. In reply, state's Advocate General M.R. Naik told the court that they can release 1,500 cusecs every day.
The court, in its September 30 order, had asked Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water every day from October 1 to 6.
