Former leader of Bharatiya Janata Party and senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani offered legal help to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice-President Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case which created much political sensation in the country.

According to a media report, Jethmalani wrote to Sonia Gandhi on December 11 saying he was ready to provide them with legal help in the case filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.

"I know you have many great lawyers in the party. Still, my services are available to you if you need," he said in his letter according to the report.

The report further quoted Jethmalani as saying that he was convinced that the Gandhis had done no wrong and was ready to defend them in the trial court free of charge.

As Sonia didn't respond to the offer, he sent a second letter saying he thinks he was 'discharged from the self-imposed obligation.'

However, Sonia responded a few days later, but it was just an acknowledgment of his first letter.

Jethmalani was expelled from the BJP in 2013 for six years on charges of "breach of discipline".
