Two earthquakes measuring 3.1 and 5.5 on the Richter scale shook Assam on Tuesday, forcing people to rush out of their houses in panic.
There was no immediate report of any injury or damage to property due to the tremors, the police said.
Met office here said the first quake of 3.1 intensity rocked Guwahati and other places of the state at 5.30am.
It had its epicentre at latitude 25.6 degree north and longitude 93.2 degree east at a depth of 10 km in Karbi Anglong district of the state.
The second tremor of moderate intensity was at 7.41am with its epicentre 23.8 north and 94.5 degree east in the Indo-Myanmar region at a depth of 100 km, the office said.
A report from Shillong said a moderate intensity quake also rocked Meghalaya and most of the north eastern region.
Officials at the Regional Seismological Centre here told PTI that the earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale occurred at around 7:11am and its epicentre was traced to a depth of 100 km underneath the earth's crust in Myanmar but close to Manipur.
There was no report of any casualty following the tremor which lasted for a few seconds only.
