Hindi is the Raj Bhasha (official language). And it must be adopted in letter and spirit literally by the government officials, according to the Modi government.

The department of official language under the union home ministry has been proactively monitoring central ministries and government departments to identify the violators of the rules that mandate Hindi should be used as the official language of communication.

As per latest government data, the department of official language has received complaints regarding reply given in English to communication received in Hindi, off and on, by central government organisations. There are also complaints regarding the issuance of press releases only in English.

“Such complaints are being forwarded to the administrative head of the organisation concerned for action as per the rule,” said a government official.

As per the data received, the figures of rules being flouted are surely not alarming, but government officials insist that sensitisation is a must and targets have to be met every year.

This year's data shows that 99.4 per cent letters received in Hindi have been replied to in Hindi only. Official language implementation committees have been constituted in the central government offices to review the progressive use of Hindi as the official language.

Moreover, Hindi Salahkar Samitis are constituted in ministries and departments to provide the necessary guidelines and official language inspections are being carried out by the regional implementation offices of the department of official language.
