As the pre-election scenario in Uttar Pradesh hots up, former chief minister Mayawati accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling Samajwadi Party of working hand in glove in the state and conspiring to weaken her Bahujan Samaj Party.

The BSP chief said that the entry of about a dozen former legislators, particularly from the BJP, into her party was due to the anti-people policies of the Union government. She said they joined her party to protest against the cow vigilantes that the saffron party “protected”.

Mayawati, however, made light of her party leaders and members joining the BJP. She pointed out that many of those who joined the BJP recently were part of that party in the past.

In a press release issued in New Delhi on Thursday, Mayawati said former leaders of her party, who crossed over to other parties, were denied tickets as people in their constituencies had raised several serious complaints against them.

Though the BJP was claiming that their fight was against the ruling SP, its actions on the ground indicated that the party felt more threatened by the BSP, Mayawati said.
