Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said Bengal was graveyard of east while justifying his party’s alliance with the Lefts.

“The situation of Bengal is very bad today. Known as Sheffield of east once, Bengal today is called the graveyard of the east. Please help us to change this bad image of Bengal,” said Rahul.

Rahul said if Congress and CPI(M) came to power in West Bengal, the alliance government would take action against the people involved in Saradha scam and Narada scam. Addressing a big rally in Howrah, Rahul said, “Those who looted your hard earned money in Saradha scam, those who took bribe, we won’t spare them.”

Rahul also said the alliance government, if voted to power, would distribute rice at Rs 2 per kg and fresh drinking water. Rahul said Congress and the Left would work to rehabilitate lakhs of jute workers. “West Bengal used to be known for jute industries. But all jute mills are closed. We will have to work on that if we form government,” said Rahul.

Putting both Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the same bracket, Rahul said, “Like Modiji adopting falsehood in Delhi, Mamataji is doing the same in Bengal”.

Rahul said Mamata had sought poribortan in 2011. “But poribortan remained only a buzzword. I went to meet flyover victims in Kolkata and they told me that Mamata Banerjee had handed over the construction charge to a syndicate run by a party member. And, they supplied inferior raw materials due to which the flyover collapsed. Will your still tolerate such a party in power?” Rahul asked.

Referring to Prime Minister Modi lambasting Mamata during his campaign in Bengal, Rahul came down heavily on Modi. “Don’t believe him. There is an understanding between him and Mamata. Both of them are similar in their style. Modiji had told you that he would bring black money to India. But a legislation has been brought recently where black money would be converted into white money. I called them as fair and lovely scheme. Mamata had also promised 70 lakh jobs. Have anyone received jobs here?” asked Rahul.
