Two people have been arrested in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a 29-year-old dalit woman, Jisha, in Perumbavoor, Kochi, Kerala.

The arrested are the neighbours of the murdered girl, according to media reports. Jisha was found murdered on April 28 at her home near a canal in Perumbavoor by her mother who works as a daily labourer.

Her body was badly mutilated and there were injuries on her private parts, according to the police.

The police are waiting for forensic reports to find out if the victim was raped and then murdered.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Kochi Range Mahipal Yadav said the rape and murder may have been committed by one person and added that a few people reportedly have said they saw a person enter Jisha's house and return on the day the incident occurred.

The IG said there are no evidence to suggest that those detained are responsible for the incident.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters: "We have asked the probe to be led by a very senior official and nothing will be left to chance to bring the culprits to justice."

'Family was under threat'

Meanwhile, the mother of the deceased said she had feared for her daughter's safety as one of the neighbours had threatened to harm her. Although this was brought to the attention of the police, no action was taken against the accused, she claimed.

Jisha's sister Deepa said the neighbours were unkind to them and were trying to evict them from the place.

"They did not come to her rescue even while she was brutally assaulted," said Deepa.
