Days after Oommen Chandy and V.S. Achuthanandan sparred over the number of cases filed against the former, the Kerala chief minister on Thursday hit back at the CPI-M saying there are 685 cases against the Left candidates in the state.

Referring to the affidavits filed by different candidates to the Election Commission, Chandy said such a large number of cases against the Left candidates proves who is behind the politics of violence in the state. The CPI-M candidates face a total of 617 cases while 152 cases have been filed against the BJP-BJDS candidates. There are only 106 cases against the UDF candidates, said Chandy in a statement.

CPI-M candidate M.V. Nikesh Kumar faces the most number of cases. There are 57 cases filed against the former journalist while party leader Pinarayi Vijayan faces 11 cases. Achuthanandan, who is the leader of Opposition, has six cases against him.
