Actor Anupam Kher on Tuesday claimed he was denied visa by Pakistan. He was invited to attend a session at the Karachi Literature festival on February 5.

According to reports, while visas were issued to 17 of 18 delegates, only Kher, who was scheduled to attend a session at the literature festival as chief guest, was denied the same.

The actor took to Twitter to share the news, saying delay is equivalent to denial.

The Pakistan High Commission responding to the news said that Kher never submitted application for the visa, according to media reports.

It further added, that as per the new policy, the applicant should produce acknowledgment slip if he had applied for visa for further process of issuance.

Confirming that he has not been issued a visa, Kher that he was very saddened by the development as he was looking forward to participate in the festival and use the platform to dispel misunderstandings in the minds of people there.

"We welcome their artistes in India. If there are objections to their performance at one place in India they are welcome at other places. But there is no reciprocity," he said.

As to why his visa has not been issued, Kher said, "I wish I knew. I am wondering if it is because I am a Kashmiri Pandit or because of my views on the tolerance debate in India."

Kher said the visa denial has left the festival organisers embarrassed and they have apologised to him.

The news comes days after he was awarded Padma Bhushan.

Kher has been increasingly making news headlines for his political stance of late. He has kicked up controversies by making bold political statements and for being a 'BJP sympathiser.'

The government awarding him Padma Bhushan was also questioned by the observers.
