Actor Priyamani sparked off a storm on Twitter on Wednesday after she urged women and girls to leave India in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of a dalit woman in Kerala.

A 28-year-old LLB student, who hailed from a poor family, was allegedly subjected to rape and brutal assault using sharp edged weapons before being murdered at her house at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district of central Kerala on April 28.

In a series of tweets, the actor expressed shock over the incident and said that she doesn't think India is safe anymore for women.

Mentioning the recent abduction attempt in Bengaluru, Priyamani said if this is the way it is going, women and girls may have to get out of the country and live elsewhere.

The tweets stirred up a controversy on the micro-blogging site with several people coming against and in support of her comments.

The actor later came up with an explanation saying she has never spoken against the country. "I have only expressed my feelings towards the untoward incidents which have occurred and r still occurring!how is this anti India??READ!!" she said.

The crime has been dubbed "Kerala's Nirbhaya" for its chilling similarities to the 2012 gangrape of a young paramedic student in a moving bus in Delhi. She later succumbed to her injuries.
