Marking 34 years of regaining consciousness after a near-fatal accident while shooting for Coolie, Amitabh Bachchan turned to Twitter, acknowledging August 2 as his second birthday, to thank his fans for their prayers. He wrote, “Some years you do not wish to remember.. thank you to them that prayed for me..”
Since midnight, Twitter saw an inflow of fan messages and tweets directed at Big B, wishing him on his 'second birthday'. The 73-year-old actor has been retweeting and thanking his fans individually. “To all that wish me today, may I just say I am overwhelmed by your prayers and concern and love ..indebted,” the actor tweeted. On his blog, he wrote, “They (fans) make these art works to commemorate the Aug 2, 1982 birthday .. !! It embarrasses me .. but the sentiments of the people who attach themselves to my life cannot be ignored and so this ..”
On July 26, 1982, a mistimed jump while filming Manmohan Desai's Coolie in Bengaluru ruptured his spleen after he hit the corner of the table during a fight scene. The actor was rushed to St. Philomena's Hospital where he underwent an emergency splenectomy. He was then airlifted and taken in an ambulance to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai where his conditioned remained critical for a week. As the nation grieved, fans performed pujas for their hero's fast recovery and wife Jaya Bachchan walked every day barefoot from Breach Candy Hospital to Siddhivinayak Temple to pray for his well-being. On August 2, 1982, Big B regained consciousness after doctors injected adrenaline into his heart as a last-ditch attempt to save him.
Manmohan Desai changed the ending of the film to show the protagonist (played by Bachchan) recovering from an operation as he said it would not be right for the hero to have cheated death to die on screen. Coolie, released in November 1983, was a smash hit.
Recalling his miraculous rebirth, Big B wrote on his blog, “I have only words of thanks and gratitude to fill up the pages of my life..a life which I truly believe came back to me because of the prayers that went up..That debt shall never be repaid..”
The actor's son, Abhishek Bachchan, wished him on Instagram.
