Audi A5 Sportback: The stylish sibling

Audi India has brought the A5 brat-pack here with much fanfare and rightly so. The new A5 trio that includes A5 Sportback, A5 Cabriolet and S5 Sportback has been brought to India much faster than the previous generation. Though the A5 is available as Coupe and Sportback variants globally, we get only the Sportback version. Those who find the Audi A4 boring or very simple may take a liking to the A5 Sportback, thanks to its design, and that is who Audi’s aiming for.

Bringing in the A5 in the Sportback form is a good decision by Audi and sensible too as two-door coupes are still finding their foot in India. Where A4 and most of the other regular Audis have straight lines, the A5 is more about curves. From the shoulder line that runs from the headlamps to the swooping roof, A5 Sportback is the sexy sibling of A4. In the face of it, the A5 gets 4-eye design LED headlamps, flatter and wider single-frame grille, pronounced wheel arches, bulged hood and LED tail lamps with dynamic indicators. The frameless doors, panoramic sunroof and 5-spoke aluminium alloy wheels all add to the flair.

The inside of the A5 doesn’t surprise you as it follows the latest Audi blueprint and is very similar to A4. A tad too similar to our liking as the A5 is supposed to have more flair. Apart from that, it is a very well put together cabin with good build quality. The low swooping roof may look good from outside but it means lesser headroom at the back. Other than that, the A5 can seat four adults in reasonable comfort. Front seats get electric adjusts, 3-zone deluxe automatic AC, virtual cockpit and 8-inch display in the centre are some of the features you get with the A5.

Audi is offering the A5 Sportback only with one engine option—2.0 litre TDI engine. The diesel unit is one of the best in the business both in performance and refinement. It puts out a maximum power of 190 hp and a peak torque of 400 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via 7 Speed Stronic transmission. The power delivery is strong with good low and middle range grunt. The engine’s refinement levels are excellent and the unit pulls the car strong post 2500 rpm. 0 to 100 km/h can be attained in 7.9 seconds and that is more than enough for a daily commuter.

Handling the A5 wouldn’t be a problem as the car doesn’t surprise you and stays well within your expectations. Though not a sporty handler (check out the S5 for that), the A5 feels planted and confident around the curves. The steering wheel has a good feedback and adds weight well. Another quality that the A5 can boast of is its ride quality. Despite sitting low, you feel right at home with the suspension working overtime to iron out the bad roads. There are no adaptive dampers offered here, but the independent suspension and multi-link axles do the job to satisfaction. Safety features for the Audi A5 Sportback include electronic stabilisation control, 6 airbags and cruise control with speed limiter.

Audi has upped the game with the launch of A5 trio. Not only there is an option for those who look for a dash of style, the performance too stands out. There will always be room for some flair and the A5 Sportback offers the right dose.
